Perserverance Through Tribulation

“And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope.” Romans 5:3-4 (NKJV)

If you are a believer, either recently or if you have been for some time, undoubtedly you have already discovered that tribulation is a reality that we must all face. While there is an on going theological debate that promotes life without tribulation, Jesus quickly lays that particular argument to rest for us. “These things I have spoken to you that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” John 16:33 (NKJV) The word “tribulation” in this instance and in our devotional text gives us the word “pressure.” The word pressure is further used with regard to the crushing of grapes or olives in a press. From a more practical perspective it is like spiritual bench pressing that helps us to build our relationship with God.

It is our faith in the grace of God in which we stand that allows us to “glory” in our tribulations or when we find ourselves under severe amounts of pressure. To glory does not mean that we are excited about going through periods of tribulation and trial, but we rejoice during the outcome when we persevere knowing that that trying of our faith ultimately results in the patience to endure. The guarantee is clear that we will go through pressure. However, every period of tribulation that we may face will also end in praise if we are willing to persevere or endure to the end. “Weeping may endure for a night but joy comes in the morning.” Psalm 30:5b (NKJV) One thing that you can count on is that no matter how dark, desolate, and dreary the night may be; morning time always comes. Rest assured joy will come in the morning. The sun will shine again.

Not only does tribulation produce perseverance or endurance, but it also helps to build our character. When you find yourself under pressure, or within the confines of manifold tribulation; no God is not trying to punish you. He is not mad at you nor is He trying to get back at you. He doesn’t have to play those kind of games with us. He wants to give us the strength to persevere that will grow and groom our spiritual maturity and character. “Indeed we count them blessed who endure. You have heard of the perseverance of Job and seen the end intended by the Lord that the Lord is very compassionate and merciful.” James 5:11 (NKJV) Only a believer who has faced tribulation and pressure can develop perseverance. That in turn produces character or “proof” of our endurance. It is the idea of “proven character”. Keep in mind that your reputation is what people say that you are. Your character is who God says that you are once you have stood the test. As a result character building produces hope.

As God deepens and develops our character we develop and display our “hope” in Him. When we hope in God, it is our earnest expectation that in spite of what we may be facing His promises toward us will never go unfulfilled. From trouble to tribulation to triumph, even when we can’t see the end with our natural eye we must endure, fight on, and not give up. God is at work, molding and making us into the image of His son. “But if we hope for what we do not see we eagerly wait for it with perseverance. Romans 8:25 (NKJV)
