Only the Word Will Endure

“Because all flesh is grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withers, and its flower falls away, but the word of the Lord will endure forever.” Now this is the word which by the gospel was preached to you.” First Peter 1:24-25 (NKJV)

The word of God is as imperishable and eternal as God himself. It is the only thing that remains constant, consistent, and changeless in a world where the foundations of society have begun to crumble. High profile institutions and individuals from every facet of life have shown that they are not immune to failure, fault, and fragility. We have seen a plethora of examples that have given us verifiable proof that this is an ongoing reality that is occurring everywhere with no immediate end in sight. Unfortunately, things are not going to get any better. The world is in a downward spiral that is a part of prophecy that is being fulfilled before our very eyes. “But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come.” II Timothy 3:1 (NKJV)

The word “perilous” in the preceding passage describes a society that is barren of virtue but abounding with vices. It further describes times that will be harsh, savage, painful, difficult, and hard to deal with. Those times are not coming; they are upon us right now; engulfing us just as sure as you read this devotional message. There appears to be no end in sight to this calamity. Nothing appears to be what it intends to be anymore. Nothing in this world or anything produced by the flesh of man can withstand the times that we now face save the word of God. The Apostle Peter describes the flesh of man as grass that will soon wither away and the glory of man as the flower of grass that will do likewise. So much for all of the technological advances, modern inventions and scientific breakthroughs. While they have their place, they are only temporal, they will not endure forever.

Peter reiterates in our devotional passage, which is a quotation of Isaiah 40:6-8, the theme of what Jesus said in the gospel of Matthew. “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will by no means pass away.” Matthew 24:35 (NKJV) Peter contrasts the frailty of the flesh and its temporary nature with the forever living, abiding, and enduring word of God. Here the idea of “endure” is to continue, dwell, remain, or stand. The word of God will endure when all else fails. It is the living, breathing, and active voice of God speaking clearly and distinctly to the blood bought, born again sons and daughters that He calls His own. Everything else will dry up, wither and waste away. If you think for one minute that you can depend on the human flesh of man, think again. “For I know that in me (that is in my flesh) nothing good dwells.” Romans 7:18a (NKJV)

With the foundations of this world crumbling before our very eyes, and the moral fabric of our society quickly eroding each day. While it may appear hopeless, the word of God will endure. When everything else is in jeopardy of being lost, the word of God will endure. The word of God is being taught and preached to us at a time that is most critical. Are we listening to it? Are we standing on it? The word of God remains and endures to encourage us, develop us, and reveal to us the heart of God with regards to every situation that we may face. What answer do you need that you have tried everywhere else to find only to fail? You will find your answer in the invincible, incorruptible, inexhaustible and ever-enduring word of God.
